From Rock to Opera

40 Years of Lighting the World of Live Entertainment

Award winning lighting designer, Patrick Woodroffe, gave a fascinating talk to C. Hoare & Co. customers on his renowned career in lighting design. His passion and obvious talent was inspirational, as he talked about some of the incredible events he has been involved in. Highlights from the talk included Patrick’s experiences as head lighting designer for The London 2012 Olympic Games and how, with his team of 75, he managed to pull off one of the most ambitious events in the history of lighting design. He gave a brief summary of the history of lighting within the rock industry. In particular he explained how the invention of the V1 moving light, which was partially invented by the rock group Genesis, had revolutionised the world of stage lighting. Furthermore he provided a witty and unique insight into the lives of some of the stars he had worked with, such as Keith Richards, Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder. He also provided a fascinating picture of Michael Jackson and what proved to be his final rehearsal. All in all it was an exceptionally entertaining and illuminating view of the surprisingly glamorous world of lighting design and was much appreciated by the audience.

Intermission Youth Theatre performance

Intermission Youth Theatre - HMP Macbeth

Customers and staff from our Lowndes Street office enjoyed an inspiring performance of HMP Macbeth by the Intermission Youth Theatre, at St Saviour’s Church, Knightsbridge, followed by a talk back with the cast members afterwards. The theatre’s talented producer re- writes Shakespeare’s plays into a modern day setting and language, working with a group of young people with challenging backgrounds from inner London who audition and then perform the plays. A number of former alumni are now working as actors and they have just launched an education company taking the plays into schools. There will be more productions to follow, including one at the bank in the New Year. Robert Harris talked to a packed house about his new book – An Officer and a Spy. He explained how the idea had come about following a meeting with Roman Polanski on a completely different project. Having seen lots of books on the Dreyfus affair on Mr Polanski’s bookshelf, Robert began researching the subject and decided to write a book from the perspective of a particular character, Georges Picquart. To illustrate some of his points, Robert read some passages from the book. The talk was fascinating, with many of the audience already committed Robert Harris fans, and lots of questions and debate.

On Wednesday, the bank welcomed trusted advisors to celebrate the success of our International Wealth Management Service. The event was themed around the 50th anniversary of Ian Fleming's publication of 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' in 1963. Ian Fleming rented 4 Mitre Court, part of the bank's premises, from 1959 until his death in 1964. Richard Garland, Head of Portfolio Construction, gave a light-hearted talk on the prospects for the Eurozone. At the end of October, funds under management stood at £1.424bn.

As part of Alexander Hoare's Winter talk series, the Intermission Theatre in Education (ITIE), treated customers to a performance of Wasted (adapted from Julius Caesar).

"ITIE blew the audience away and received a spontaneous standing ovation for their interpretation of Julius Caesar". ITIE is a professional theatre company engaging young people from London's inner-city communities who are at risk of offending or who lack opportunity. The bank recently hosted a film preview of Effie Gray, a film directed by Richard Laxton and produced by Donald Rosenfeld and Andreas Roald. Donald Rosenfeld is the former president of Merchant Ivory Productions. The film is due for release later this year.

The film explores the relationship between Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning) and Victorian art critic and historian John Ruskin (Greg Wise). A fascinating story that remains shrouded in mystery to this day. The script was written by Emma Thompson, who appears in the film as Lady Eastlake. David Suchet stars as John Ruskin senior and Julie Walters as Margaret Ruskin. The film is set in Scotland, London and Venice. The film was introduced by its producer Andreas Roald who very kindly took part in a Q&A and drinks reception enjoyed by our customers.
