James Catford, Group CEO of The Bible Society gave an evening talk to customers of the bank, outlining the explosive growth of Christianity in China where there are probably now 100m active believers. James spoke about practical examples of their work there. The talk was well received by customers who attended.

Ladies Discussion Forum with Lady Borwick

Victoria, Lady Borwick, Deputy Mayor of London, spoke to a forum of female representatives from legal and accountancy firms at C. Hoare & Co. over lunch on Wednesday, 30th October. The talk took us on a tour of the extremely wide remit of the London Assembly. Victoria started with an interesting intellectual challenge for the audience – who were each of the six tunnel boring machines used in Crossrail named after?* After her talk, Victoria took questions on a wide range of subjects from housing – such as how accommodation can be provided in London at affordable levels and why there appear to be increasing numbers of homeless people on the streets of London, to transport with discussion on both the rail network and airport capacity. A topical subject following transport difficulties experienced after Monday’s storm. Everyone present found the talk both fascinating and extremely informative. *Ada, after Ada Lovelace, one of the earliest computer scientists; Phyllis, after Phyllis Pearsall who created the London A-Z; Mary, the wife of Isambard Kingdom Brunel; Sophia, wife of Marc Isambard Brunel; Victoria and Elizabeth after the two Queens, Victoria, monarch in the first age of great railway engineering projects and Elizabeth II our current monarch.

Our second Entrepreneurs' Forum took place on 7th November. The forum brings together entrepreneurs to listen to an interesting speaker and to exchange views. The speaker this time was Faisel Rahman, founder and Managing Director of Fair Finance, who talked about his experience as an entrepreneur who had developed microfinance successfully in London. In 2000 he developed the first microcredit project in the UK and later created an innovative and sustainable debt advice service for the underpriviledged. His work received acolades from the Bank of England and the New York Federal Reserve Bank and has helped hundreds create businesses and saved many hundreds more from eviction. The talk prompted lots of good discussion and interaction with a very appreciative audience.

In the second in the series of this year’s Winter Talks, Matthew Sinclair, Chief Executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, gave an interesting and thought provoking presentation on the UK tax system. Matthew spoke passionately about the current tax regime, highlighted how funds generated through tax are wasted by Government and outlined his thoughts on an alternative system. The talk was extremely well attended by a diverse audience who engaged in a lively Q&A session.

The bank hosted an event on Thursday 23rd January, for around 100 trusted advisors and other key individuals within the industry.

The evening gave us the opportunity to look back on another strong year, marking the first anniversary of our Portfolio Managers and Chartered Financial Planners formally coming under one independent Wealth Management banner. We were able to celebrate Burns Night, with a piper welcoming our guests and our Chief Investment Officer, David Cavaye, sharing his own flavour of Scotland when he addressed the haggis. The evening was rounded off by a tasting from one of Scotland's oldest family-owned malt whisky makers.

Robert holds a Masters Degree in Addiction Psychology and is founder and chairman of 'The Recovery Centre'www.therecoverycentre.comSuccess and wealth can sometimes have unwelcome outcomes in the family environment, especially for the younger generation, and Robert shared some experiences and insights into his work with troubled people. An important thought for very wealthy families is that self worth not net worth is what matters. Robert believes in positive psychology, and one of the tools for this is a daily gratitude list - we all wrote our list for the day - which encourages positive thinking. Another tool he uses for people who are feeling very down about life is to go out into the street and help someone - maybe a tourist who needs directions - and then recognise how much better it makes them feel for putting someone else first. The question and answer session was very lively and everyone was keen to learn more about Robert's experience.

The bank held it's third Entrepreneurs' Forum last night with guest speaker Lord Finkelstein of Pinner providing a fascinating insight in to the political landscape and his personal views on the ideas that will underpin the manifestos in the run up to the next General Election. Daniel Finkelstein is a weekly columnist, leader, writer and Assocaite Editor of The Times. Before joining the paper in 2001, he was adviser to Prime Minister John Major and Conservative Leader, William Hague. He is also Chairman of Policy Exchange, a leading independent think tank. The Entrepreneurs' Forum enables successful entrepreneurial customers from diverse backgrounds to meet in an informal setting and to enjoy discussions on a range of interesting topics given by high profile speakers. The bank welcomed students from Benenden School and Dulwich College to a careers' morning at our Fleet Street branch recently. Younger members of staff were given the opportunity to present to an inquisitive group of students on a variety of subjects.

Hoare's Bank Careers Day

The morning started with the principles of banking where they worked on a case study entitled "Would you lend to this man?". Then followed a discussion on financial fraud where the group were shown fake bank notes and cheques. Afterwards they worked in teams in an investment game where they were confronted with a series of economic data which they had to apply to their trading tactics. After the game, Annamaria Koerling and Samuel Lush gave a talk on behavioural finance entitled 'Greed, Fear and Folly: The Common Pitfalls of Investing". Many of the students drew on the theories proposed in the behavioural finance talk to help understand their decisions in the Investment game and an enthusiastic discussion ensued! The day concluded with an address by Alexander Hoare and then an informal 'Meet the Managers' session over a sandwich lunch. Many of the students have referenced their experience of the day in their university applications and when applying for other internships. Our speaker at the latest Ladies' Forum was Peninah Thomson OBE, CEO of The Mentoring Foundation. Peninah opened her talk with the percentages of females who are non-exec and executive directors on the Boards of FTSE companies. Whilst the picture is improving, there is a long way to go!

Peninah's interest in women's representation in the Boardroom was first piqued following dissatisfaction with the way women were represented at a conference she attended. Over the following year, she and two other ladies she met at that conference researched the subject extensively. Peninah subsequently worked with the Chairmen of various FTSE companies to highlight the issue and with their help developed the FTSE 100 Cross-Company Mentoring Executive Programme. This grew and grew and ultimately became The Mentoring Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, of which Peninah became the inaugural Chief Executive. There are now more than sixty FTSE 100 Chairmen and Chief Executives mentoring female executives from just below Board level at another company, to help them become credible candidates for executive and non-executive Board positions. The programme has proven to be highly successful and a version has been developed for 'next generation' women. As ever, it is the stories that add colour to any talk, and Peninah gave us plenty of interesting and amusing anecdotes from her experiences. There was a lively Q&A session following the talk with members of the audience sharing their own experiences.
